The radioactive
particles billowing out of the wrecked Fukushima nuclear plant caught
the officers and crew of the USS Ronald Reagan unawares. The gargantuan
vessel is equipped with radiation sensors that can identify the spectrum
of isotopes from civilian accidents up to all-out nuclear warfare. Although
the vessel was cruising at a presumably safe 80 nautical miles from the
meltdowns, the shipboard alarms started to buzz wildly.

Reconnaissance
helicopters roared back to the mother ship, which then carved an arc through
the chill waters of the Liman Current. The pride of the U.S. Navy was
fleeing the coast of Japan like a wounded whale from a shiver of hungry
sharks.
The USS Reagan’s
support role for Operation Tomodachi sustained far more injuries than
any of the 9th Carrier Group’s exercises off the Korean Peninsula.
The crews of three helicopter suffered high exposure levels, and sailors
operating the ventilation controls have since come down with severe radiation-related
symptoms.

Fukushima radiation
seeped beyond soft tissue into hard steel. Below the flight deck, nuclear
isotopes in the air flowed into the air vents and below-deck ducts, while
radioactive seawater surged through its turbine pumps and tubes that suck
in seawater for the desalination system and to cool the vessel’s twin
nuclear-power reactors. The artificially produced freshwater for washing
and drinking aboard ship was soon toxic.
The detection
of war-grade plutonium residues sparked rumors of a nuclear strike on
Fukushima in undeclared war by an unidentified power. Meanwhile a blanket
of censorship was imposed over the condition and whereabouts of the USS
Ronald Reagan, which at that moment could have possibly been the first
casualty of World War III. Not until months later did confidential leaks
emerge from U.S. nonproliferation experts disclosing secret transfers
of highly enriched plutonium from Texas blended into mixed-oxide fuel
rods for Fukushima Reactors 3 and 4.

Over the two
years since the March 2011 meltdowns, the radiation-stricken carrier vanished
from the sailing schedule, leaving other naval behemoths to take over
its missions in the South China Sea, Gulf of Aden, the Persian Gulf and
Red Sea. Then this spring, the vessel reappeared in San Diego as if nothing
had happened.

The story behind
the USS Ronald Reagan’s long absence from active duty was revealed by
a Navy long-timer perched at a bar outside the Bremerton Naval Shipyard
in Seattle.

After flushing
its pipes while transporting sailors’ cars to Alaska, the carrier was
docked for decontamination and refitting along Bremerton’s “Carrier Row”.
From early autumn 2011 until mid-March 2013, a period of 18 months, shipyard
workers replaced irradiated air ducts, pumps, pipes, gaskets, hoses and
electronic controls sensitive to radiation. The work gangs were ordered
to prevent release of any contaminated liquid into Puget Sound in compliance
with a prior Environmental Agency pollution complaint issued in 2010.
(My dosimeter
readings at Bremerton and at several points in Puget Sound confirmed the
absence of radiation leakage from the USS Reagan. Frequent sightings of
dead Dungeness crabs with floppy legs, however, suggested mortality caused
by chemical toxins, probably surfactants used for cleaning the carrier
and possibly heavy-metal compounds, possibly chrome, to deter barnacles
from the hull.)
A
backhoe and steel ring are hauled to Hanford’s leaking 200 storage tank

The vast pile
of radioactive scrap and barrels of liquid waste were then loaded onto
a freight train that rumbled out of the shipyard to a final resting place.
Its destination was and still is undisclosed to the news media, the public
and state officials. The terminus of that old rail track, say the shipyard
workers, is Hanford Site.
Mapping
the Terrain
Moral outrage
at the disposal of the military’s radioactive hardware in a Department
of Energy (DOE) facility supposedly under decommissioning was pushed to
the back of my mind by the astonishing natural beauty of the Cascade Range.
The four-hour drive from Seattle to Hanford offers a first-hand study
in ecology. The lacework of inlets and rocky islands of Puget Sound was
carved by glaciers during the Ice Age, when the sea was much lower. Those
rivers of ice originated in the Cascades, a sawtooth chain of basalt pillars,
remnants of ancient volcanoes. Its ridgeline divides Washington State
into two major eco-zones, the temperate rainforest of the Pacific coast
and, on the leeward side, arid lands stretching toward the Rockies.

The eastern
slope of the watershed creates hundreds of streams that merge into the
Columbia River, which quenches apple orchards and the green pastures for
Angus cattle, dairy cows and bison. The mighty current is slowed by a
series of hydropower dams before hitting its lower reaches at Portland,
Oregon.
Under a high
bluff at Wanapum Dam, about 30 miles northwest of Hanford, my dosimeter
readings climbed to 0.16 microsieverts. Downstream, the findings were
much lower. When the air is bone-dry, how can evaporated wastewater from
leaking tanks at Hanford move so far upstream against the prevailing wind?
Why are there no traces of its passage up the gorge? I take mental note
of this baffling riddle before moving on.
Nuclear
Boneyard
A
plutonium processing reactor
Endless flows
of water and hydropower are the necessary utilities for the production
of nuclear weapons, and the Columbia provides these in abundance to Hanford
Site, founded in 1943 under the Manhattan Project. Ringed by rosy red
hills peppered with fingers of black basalt and clumps of sage, the first
impression of Hanford basin is one of awe at Nature’s raw power rather
than fear of a grim manmade Mordor. Technology’s supreme force shrinks
against such grandeur; its fabrications scattered like the Mad Hatter’s
overturned teacups and sugar cubes alongside the Columbia.
Yet one of
those fly specks down there, inside the facility’s 586 square miles (1,517
sq. km) area, is the world’s first plutonium-production reactor. Hanford
100B provided the implosive force for the Trinity test blast and for Fat
Man, the hydrogen bomb that annihilated Nagasaki in August 1945. Nagasaki,
so much like Puget Sound, with its cathedral, shipyards, parks, saloons
and Victorian era facades . . . vanished like dream in a flash of blinding
light.
To
the right of the power line is a 100 series reactor.
After passing
under its rusty bridges in the hills, here on dry pale ground, I spot
the railroad track pointing toward the 200 West Area. On lonesome roads
outside and inside the vast facility, long-bed trucks haul yellow bulldozers
and back hoes, the grave diggers for dead machines. The earth-movers are
fitted with glass-enclosed air-filtered cabins, the thinnest of protective
shields for the drivers.
In rows of
trenches inside that dusty tract are the guts of the USS Ronald Reagan
along with the nuclear reactors from 117 decommissioned submarines. The
reactor cores are left uncovered so that Russian satellites can verify
reductions in America’s strategic arsenal. A retired nuclear-plant operator
explains how those reactor cores, too heavy and bulky for the train, are
instead transported by barge up the Columbia River. At Port Benson, adjoining
Hanford Site, the load is rolled aboard a land carrier with 16-wheel axles
and hauled at 5 miles per hour to the nuclear graveyard.
The Puget Sound
Naval Shipyard at Bremerton is the only facility that dismantles America’s
fleet of aging nuclear submarines. The fuel from the scrapped reactors
is sent by rail to a federal storage facility near Idaho Falls. Little
is known about the movements of naval cargo because several maritime lanes
in Puget Sound are protected by armed guards on speed boats, Navy SEAL
divers prowling underwater and surveillance dolphins equipped with electronic
sensors and GPS tracking devices. Fishermen, clam diggers and recreational
sailors know better than to mess with this security force.
There is no
legal mandate to inform Washington State communities of passing reactor-toting
barges because the Navy designates the cargo as “low level” waste. Local
residents who are curious about these shipments will not find the route
map posted at their docks or bridges, so here it is, courtesy of the Washington
Physicians for Social Responsibility:
“The route
begins at the (Bremerton) Shipyard and goes though Rich Passage, past
Restoration Point, and northerly though Puget Sound. The barge will then
move west through the Strait of Juan De Fuca, past Cape Flattery, before
turning south and going along the Washington Coast. As the barge makes
its way to the mouth of the Columbia River it will not enter the area
near the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary known as the Area to
Be Avoided.
The barge will then go up the Columbia River following the
regular shipping channel that is used for commercial cargo. The ocean
tugs turn over the barge to river tugs on the lower Columbia. The river
route passes through the navigation locks at the Bonneville, Dalles, John
Day, and McCanry dams, until finally reaching the Port of Benton. “
Portlanders
are hereby informed that radiation is coming and going, upstream and downstream.
It’s been happening since 1986 and will continue indefinitely.
Hearts
Afire
A point of
light is flickering from inside one of the older thermal power plants.
Next to a No Entry sign, my travel party passes a pair of binoculars for
a closer look. It is not sunlight reflected off a window pane. Incredibly,
there’s a massive fire blazing inside the nuclear plant. Flames are blowing
out of the open door, which is at least two stories tall and wide enough
for several trucks. No black smoke is being emitted, nor do the flames
diminish in intensity. Alarms are not blaring and there are no firefighting
sirens. Therefore, it must be a gas fire, deliberately set.
The sight of
a structure’s innards on fire is dumbfounding. Nothing about this sort
of incident has ever been reported in Hanford press releases. What could
DOE be up to? Surfacing in my mind’s eye is a flashback of the dosimeter
reading at the Wanapum hydropower dam. Hanford is being decommissioned,
and the fastest way to clean out a thermal power plant used in the past
to incinerate nuclear waste is to torch it. The invisible hot fumes lift
the radioactive particles hundreds of meters into the desert sky, and
then at nighttime an updraft carries the airborne waste up the Columbia
gorge to Wanapum and beyond. Thus, the radioactive residues disappear
as if by magic, and the monitors, inspectors and visitors remain none
the wiser.
Atmospheric
releases blowing out of Hanford are swirling up and down the Columbia
gorge, unbeknownst to ranchers, apple growers, restaurant operators, school
teachers and truckers along the riverbanks. Nobody on the outside is being
warned of the threat. This is still the Wild West, where an outlaw gang
like the DOE can kill everyone and anything that stands in their way.
Above
the Aquifer
For plant workers,
the most fearsome piece of equipment inside plutonium-processing and warhead-production
facilities is the glove-box. Since the more delicate operations must be
done by hand, glove-boxes have a window and fitted with a pair of holes
for insertion from fingers to elbow. In both Fukushima and Hanford, the
best way to test exposure levels in nuclear workers is to measure castoff
gloves. At a roadside spot convenient for quick relief, a black work glove
was lying on the gravel. It registered 0.28 microsieverts, meaning whoever
urinated is a dead man walking.
By the 1960s,
waste disposal became a major problem at Hanford due to the expanding
number of 100 series reactors, along with plutonium processing centers
and a power generation plant. Initially, the DOE planned to drill long-term
storage caverns into Gable Mountain, a saddle-shaped mound of basalt on
the plant’s north side between the Columbia River reactors and the plutonium-enrichment
facilities.
The
warning sign is posted at a waste disposal site adjoining a fast-flowing
drainage ditch.
Geologists,
working on the environmental feasibility report, found that Hanford Site
sits atop the Pasco Aquifer, the source of well water for towns, ranches
and fruit farms inside the big bulge of the Columbia. This discovery prompted
the 1978 DOE study of Yucca Mountain in Nevada as a permanent repository
of nuclear waste, but the proposed site was later abandoned due to political
opposition from nearby Las Vegas interests.
The termination
of Yucca Mountain led to an untenable situation at the 200 East Tank Farm.
There, 177 rusted-out single- and double-shelled tanks “are far gone,
past their 20-year lifetime,” said the plant operator. Tritium has been
leaking onto the ground and in the air. A greater problem is that solid
particles of plutonium and other radioactive elements are settling to
the bottom of the wastewater tanks. When atoms are in close proximity,
the release of neutrons from radioactive decay can result in a chain reaction.
DOE engineers
are anxious about the possibility of an explosive chain reaction at the
tank farm similar to the tritium blast that wrecking Fukushima’s Reactor
3. Tritium and deuterium, also known as heavy water, along with hydrogen
gas, could blow the tanks apart, sending radioactive steam into the clouds.
A much greater threat, said the plant insider, is a downward blast into
the Pasco Aquifer, sending ripples of death through hundreds of miles
of drinking water for local residents. Leakage from ruptured tanks into
the Columbia would doom downstream communities, including Portland and
its Silicon Forest industrial parks, anchored by Intel.

To prevent
this doomsday scenario, the DOE contracted the Bechtel engineering company
to design as unmanned mixing system to prevent the precipitation of plutonium
from the wastewater. The controversial design for the vitrification plant
uses jet pulses through tubes, called turkey basters, to repeatedly remix
the radioactive soup, keeping the radioactive particles in permanent suspension.
The design is fraught with weak points that could easily burst under corrosion
and high pressure. Cost overruns and construction delays have postponed
completion from 2007 to 2022, which is probably much too late to head
off a catastrophe.
DOE, the Pentagon
and nuclear industry should admit the obvious: Hanford is broken and cannot
be fixed. A radical alternative to storage at Hanford needs to be developed
rapidly and a crash program will require vast sums of money and the political
will to stop all nuclear operations from coast to coast. Permissiveness
toward the nuclear industry is suicidal. A new energy policy must begin
with zero tolerance for nuclear.

Turn
Out the Lights
The music’s
over for the nuclear industry. Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima
have savaged the myth of cheap and safe power from atom-splitting. Hanford
takes this fiasco a step further by implicating the military in nuclear
skullduggery. Despite its bloated defense budget, the Pentagon is misappropriating
the fiscal resources of the DOE, which must dispose of nuclear-contaminated
military hardware. Funds that could otherwise be allocated to replacing
the storage tanks at Hanford are being spent on burying submarine reactors.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is facing a radioactive mess
of waste, fraud and mismanagement.
A
housing development reflects fatal problems in local zoning ordinances.
The ominous
situation at the Hanford rust belt is the result of a false sense of national
security. Nuclear weapons have been ineffective as an instrument for global
stability since their inception. Nuclear deterrence has failed to prevent
outbreaks of war and terrorism, and the Cold War would have ended sooner
without warheads. Instead of preserving the peace, the nuclear arsenals
of the major powers have only spurred on proliferation by minor regional
players.
However fast
or slow the pace of future nuclear drawdown, the problem of long-term
storage remains a formidable challenge, now that Yucca Mountain is nixed.
The search for a safe site for a nuclear-waste repository should have
started yesterday. The federal government controls millions of acres in
sites that have outlived their usefulness, for example, military zones
like Fallon test range or Area 51. The Pentagon should use its own turf
to store its waste instead of dumping on the hard-pressed DOE. The cost
of the relocating naval reactors should be deducted from the inflated
military budget and not from the shrinking pockets of taxpayers.
Ozone
Loss Led to Climate Chaos
If the threat
from Fukushima isn’t enough to bear, lethal radioactive releases from
Hanford and San Onofre, along with Indian Point and the Napoleonville
sinkhole, should motivate Americans to political action against the nuclear
lobby and its sycophants. National security and, much more, the very existence
of American society and the continent’s natural environment, are coming
apart from the effects of high-energy particles in the jet stream, which
cause ozone depletion over the Northern Hemisphere. The consequences include
the recent tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma, and an epidemic of winter
twisters, derecho storms, flooding and drought.
The
ribs of a wild faun indicate dangerous radiation levels in coyotes.
The harmful
influence of carbon dioxide on global weather, as exaggerated by supporters
of TEPCO and the Tennessee Valley Authority, is a convenient ruse to divert
attention and funding from the immediate task of shutting down nuclear
power.
An end to nuclear
tyranny is directly linked to the revival of genuine democracy. A sinister
and cynical force within America’s political establishment, economic elite
and scientific elect is desperately trying to prevent Americans from recovering
this nation’s foundational values of civic duty, ethical responsibility
and common sense.
Any physicist,
engineer, bureaucrat, president or monarch who persists in uttering ultra-absurd
nonsense in defense of nuclear power should be hauled away to a padded
cell for deprogramming and decommissioning. If anything is going to be
buried, it should be that deceiving pack of con artists and scoundrels.
With so many
burned-out reactors and morally warped scoundrels to deal with, let’s
hear what Nick Santoro (Joe Pesci) of Casino has to say: “A lot
of holes in the desert, and a lot of problems are buried there. You gotta
have the hole already dug before you show up with a package in the trunk.
Otherwise, you’re talking about a half-hour to 45 minutes of digging.
And who knows who’s gonna come along at that time? Pretty soon you gotta
dig a few more holes. You could be there all fricking night.”

The Columbia
River, once a life-giver for the Pacific Northwest, has become the bringer
of death on an unimaginable scale. Testing of radiation levels in its
waters is not being done by any government agency. My dosimeter readings
at the Hanford and on the mid-reaches of the Columbia cannot be a substitute
for a wider monitoring program, but they do point to the rising threat
of nuclear contamination.
Even with scientific
Geiger counters, the testing of water remains an elusive task.
Gamma rays
are reflected in water, throwing off readings by as much as 20 times lower
than the actual level of contamination. Thus, the only way for a layman
to make estimates in the field is by measuring biological accumulation
in plants and animals.
Dosimeter readings
on the bluffs northwest of Hanford showed low levels, due to the prevailing
wind and lack of airborne moisture.
At a riverine
chokepoint on the north bend between Reactors D and H, a wide variation
in readings, from 0.08 to 0.28 microsieverts, with the highest in sage,
indicated different rates of water absorption by various species of flora.

At points downriver,
near the southern tip of Hanford, the measurements on different plant
species ran consistently in the 0.28 range, equivalent to coastal areas
inside the Fukushima exclusion area (9 km from the meltdowns). A ribcage
from a faun devoured by coyotes showed remarkably high contamination,
suggesting higher levels inside predators.
The high water
from the spring snowmelt prevented access to underwater vegetation. The
readings along the outer bank of the Columbia, however, indicate levels
dangerous to downstream communities and coastal populations in northern
Oregon.

Take A Radioactive Bullet For The Team
“You people who live near the Nevada Test Site are in a very real sense participants in the Nation’s atomic test program,” boasted a propaganda pamphlet distributed to those living downwind from the American nuclear test site in Nevada in 1955. In the end this statement turned out to be more ominous than it was celebratory. Their primary means of “participation” in the nation’s program was to be silent about being irradiated and having their land contaminated by fallout radiation from clouds that blew overhead after nuclear weapon tests for years. Of course that doesn’t count paying high taxes for the gift of national security.
All across the globe communities have been devastated by radiation in the name of giving the members of those communities “security.” This is especially true of communities that suffered from the testing of nuclear weapons in the atmosphere, however, many of the communities that experienced underground testing, such as Pokharan (of which today is the anniversary of the first test there) experienced the venting of radiation from the underground shafts, contaminating areas near to the test sites. This was especially true of the French Bérly nuclear test in Algeria in 1962 in which the tunnel, drilled into a hillside, partially collapsed venting tremendous amounts of radiation that contaminated the surrounding communities.
While communities on every continent besides South America and Antarctica have experienced contamination from nuclear weapon testing, not one person has yet been “protected” by nuclear weapon testing. Arguments are made that vast nuclear arsenals have “deterred” nuclear war, but these arguments rest on assumptions and are as demonstrable as the notion that prayer produces miracles. What is certain is that the communities that have been the sites of nuclear weapon testing have experienced radiological contamination and that this has led to illness, loss of access to land and seas, disruption of traditional diets, traditional lifestyles, and ruptures of culture.
In Australia where aboriginal societies were displaced by British nuclear testing in the 1950-60s, generations of knowledge of the land—where to find water and game—were broken when communities were simply moved off of traditional lands. Survival in areas in which ancestral knowledge did not guide and protect these communities proved extremely difficult. But as (barely) Australians and members of the Commonwealth, their safety was supposedly guaranteed by these tests. In truth there never was a threat to the safety of people living in Australia that was protected by the British testing of nuclear weapons. Rather, it was the testing itself that destroyed communities and left land desolate.
In all nations that have built, tested and maintain nuclear arsenals, those arsenals have taken essential resources away from the maintenance of social welfare. In the United States, arguably the richest country in history during the period of the Cold War, the dominance of public tax monies by the nuclear weapon complex, and the military as a whole, has left the country depleted of social wealth in a few short decades.
During the early Cold War period there were times when 10% of all electricity was being used to build, maintain and deploy nuclear weapons. Did this protect the nation, or did it cost the citizens? I would argue that the pursuit of nuclear weapons by any nation is an attack on the welfare of the citizenry in terms both of the public cost, and in antagonizing the neighbors and enemies of the nation. It is clearly true that possessing nuclear weapons has not kept any nation from becoming embroiled in warfare, and has proved useless once war commences. For those who live close to nuclear weapon testing sites, either domestically or in the colonial reaches of the nuclear power, the tests themselves have been a kind of warfare wagged upon them directly by their own governments.
Like the crown jewels of nobility past, nuclear weapons are a vast commitment of public wealth to the purpose of dazzling observers. Nuclear prima donnas display their expensive, glittering weapons to establish status and dominance. If we are lucky the cost to the citizens who pay for this is only money. But for those who live near to the nuclear testing facilities of the exclusive club of nuclear states, the cost is higher. They pay with their health, their families, their communities, and uncertain futures that accompany contaminated lands and gene pools.

During the early Cold War period there were times when 10% of all electricity was being used to build, maintain and deploy nuclear weapons. Did this protect the nation, or did it cost the citizens? I would argue that the pursuit of nuclear weapons by any nation is an attack on the welfare of the citizenry in terms both of the public cost, and in antagonizing the neighbors and enemies of the nation. It is clearly true that possessing nuclear weapons has not kept any nation from becoming embroiled in warfare, and has proved useless once war commences. For those who live close to nuclear weapon testing sites, either domestically or in the colonial reaches of the nuclear power, the tests themselves have been a kind of warfare wagged upon them directly by their own governments.
Like the crown jewels of nobility past, nuclear weapons are a vast commitment of public wealth to the purpose of dazzling observers. Nuclear prima donnas display their expensive, glittering weapons to establish status and dominance. If we are lucky the cost to the citizens who pay for this is only money. But for those who live near to the nuclear testing facilities of the exclusive club of nuclear states, the cost is higher. They pay with their health, their families, their communities, and uncertain futures that accompany contaminated lands and gene pools.

WHITE HOUSE APPROVES RADICAL RADIATION LEVELS, Civilian Cancer Deaths Expected to Skyrocket
Washington, DC — The White House has given final approval for dramatically raising permissible radioactive levels in drinking water and soil following “radiological incidents,” such as nuclear power-plant accidents and dirty bombs. The final version, slated for Federal Register publication as soon as today, is a win for the nuclear industry which seeks what its proponents call a “new normal” for radiation exposure among the U.S population, according Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).
Issued by the Environmental Protection Agency, the radiation guides (called Protective Action Guides or PAGs) allow cleanup many times more lax than anything EPA has ever before accepted. These guides govern evacuations, shelter-in-place orders, food restrictions and other actions following a wide range of “radiological emergencies.”
The Obama administration blocked a version of these PAGs from going into effect during its first days in office. The version given approval late last Friday is substantially similar to those proposed under Bush but duck some of the most controversial aspects:
In soil, the PAGs allow long-term public exposure to radiation in amounts as high as 2,000 millirems. This would, in effect, increase a longstanding 1 in 10,000 person cancer rate to a rate of 1 in 23 persons exposed over a 30-year period;
- In water, the PAGs punt on an exact new standard and EPA “continues to seek input on this.” But the thrust of the PAGs is to give on-site authorities much greater “flexibility” in setting aside established limits; and
- Resolves an internal fight inside EPA between nuclear versus public health specialists in favor of the former. The PAGs are the product of Gina McCarthy, the assistant administrator for air and radiation whose nomination to serve as EPA Administrator is taken up this week by the Senate.
- Despite the years-long internal fight, this is the first public official display of these guides. This takes place as Japan grapples with these same issues in the two years following its Fukushima nuclear disaster.
stated PEER Executive Director Jeff Ruch, noting that the EPA package lacks a cogent rationale, is largely impenetrable and hinges on a series of euphemistic “weasel words.” “No compelling justification is offered for increasing the cancer deaths of Americans innocently exposed to corporate miscalculations several hundred-fold.”
Reportedly, the PAGs had been approved last fall but their publication was held until after the presidential election. The rationale for timing their release right before McCarthy’s confirmation hearing is unclear.
Since the PAGs guide agency decision-making and do not formally set standards or repeal statutory requirements, such as the Safe Drinking Water Act and Superfund, they will go into full effect following a short public comment period. Nonetheless, the PAGs will likely determine what actions take place on the ground in the days, weeks, months and, in some cases, years following a radiological emergency.

Media Silent On Fukushima Radiation Impact In US
Sometimes big news stories can only be seen by the shadows they cast.
You would think that it should be easy to find detailed updates on the
Fukushima disaster's impact on our fishing industry, milk production,
global radiation distribution patterns, etc.
You would be mistaken. The massive media coverage following the initial disaster has fallen nearly silent. Some frustrated environmental advocates have suggested that there is a media blackout. Probably not, but media follow-up stories are few and far between these days.
In July of last year there were major stories about Fukushima and the plum of radiation reaching across the Pacific Ocean towards North America. On July 16, 2012, Deborah Dupre of the Examiner reported the following:
"As hair falls out of a Fukushima victim's head, a new German study reports that North America's West Coast will be the area most contaminated by Fukushima cesium of all regions in Pacific in 10 years, an "order-of-magnitude higher" than waters off Japan, according to a new German study followed by a former New York Times journalist going inside the no-entry zone and reporting radiation levels over 10 times higher than Tepco's data."

The article went on to say: "After 10 years, the concentrations become nearly homogeneous over the whole Pacific, with higher values in the east, extending along the North American coast with a maximum (~1 --- 10 -'4) off Baja California," a new research report states."
Then, on August 22, 2012, Japan's NHK News reported that the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant detected radiation levels 380 times the government safety limit in a fish caught off Fukushima Prefecture.

Since then not much more has been reported on the spread of radiation, although there continues to be reports about the tons of debris from the tsunami still washing up on the Pacific coast.

My internet search skill may not be the best, but the fact that I have to search for follow-up stories is a warning sign. Journalists and the media should be paying more attention. The only recent article I could find related to radiation fallout from Fukushima was a scientific study published in November, 2012. It focuses primarily on how tracing the travel of radionuclides gives insight into atmospheric air circulation in the Northern Hemisphere. It is clear from the abstract that atmospheric traces of radiation from Fukushima have already encircled the hemisphere.
We deserve to know more about what the US, Canadian and Mexican governments are doing to monitor radiation levels, track distribution rates and study how it may be impacting our food and water.

California Slammed By Fukushima Radiation Science Confirms
Fukushima Radiation Plume Hit Southern and Central California
The Journal Environmental Science and Technology reports in a new study that the Fukushima radiation plume contacted North America at California “with greatest exposure in central and southern California”, and that Southern California’s seaweed tested over 500% higher for radioactive iodine-131 than anywhere else in the U.S. and Canada:Projected paths of the radioactive atmospheric plume emanating from the Fukushima reactors, best described as airborne particles or aerosols for 131I, 137Cs, and 35S, and subsequent atmospheric monitoring showed it coming in contact with the North American continent at California, with greatest exposure in central and southern California. Government monitoring sites in Anaheim (southern California) recorded peak airborne concentrations of 131I at 1.9 pCi m−3Anaheim is where Disneyland is located.

- No results after March 28 were reported
Of course, the government is doing everything it can to help citizens cover up what’s occurring. We pointed out in January:
Instead of doing much to try to protect their citizens from Fukushima, Japan, the U.S. and the EU all just raised the radiation levels they deem “safe”.
Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen says that high-level friends in the State Department told him that Hillary Clinton signed a pact with her counterpart in Japan agreeing that the U.S. will continue buying seafood from Japan, despite that food not being tested for radioactive materials [see this].
And the Department of Energy is trying to replace the scientifically accepted model of the dangers of low dose radiation based on voodoo science. Specifically, DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley Labs used a mutant line of human cells in a petri dish which was able to repair damage from low doses of radiation, and extrapolated to the unsupported conclusion that everyone is immune to low doses of radiation….Indeed:
American and Canadian authorities have virtually stopped monitoring airborne radiation, and are not testing fish for radiation. (Indeed, the EPA reacted to Fukushima by raising “acceptable” radiation levels.)
So – as in Japan – radiation is usually discovered by citizens and the handful of research scientists with funding to check, and not the government. See this, this, this, this, this and this.
The Japanese government’s entire strategy from day one has been to cover up the severity of the Fukushima accident. This has likely led to unnecessary, additional deaths.
Indeed, the core problem is that all of the world’s nuclear agencies are wholly captured by the nuclear industry … as are virtually all of the supposedly independent health agencies.
So the failure of the American, Canadian and other governments to test for and share results is making it difficult to hold an open scientific debate about what is happening.And it’s not just radiation from Japan. An effort by the Southern California Edison power company to secretly ramp up production to avoid public disclosure may have led to a leak at the San Onofre nuclear power plant.

Fukushima Unit 4 Sinking
Though the mainstream media has long since abandoned the issue, the precarious situation at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power facility in Japan is only continuing to worsen, according to a prominent Japanese official. During a recent interview, Mitsuhei Murata, the former Japanese Ambassador to both Switzerland and Senegal, explained that the ground beneath the plant's Unit 4 is gradually sinking, and that the entire structure is very likely on the verge of complete collapse.
This is highly concerning, as Unit 4 currently holds more than 1,500 spent nuclear fuel rods, and a collective 37 million curies of deadly radiation that, if released, could make much of the world completely uninhabitable. As some Natural News readers will recall, Unit 4 contains the infamous elevated cooling pool that was severely damaged following the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that struck on March 11, 2011.
According to the Secretary of former Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, the ground beneath Unit 4 has already sunk by about 31.5 inches since the disaster, and this sinking has taken place unevenly. If the ground continues to sink, which it is expected to, or if another earthquake of even as low as a magnitude six occurs in the region, the entire structure could collapse, which would fully drain the cooling pool and cause a catastrophic meltdown.
"If Unit 4 collapses, the worse case scenario will be a meltdown, and a resultant fire in the atmosphere. That will be the most unprecedented crisis that man has ever experienced. Nobody will be able to approach the plants ... as all will have melted down and caused a big fire," said Murata during the interview. "Many scientists say if Unit 4 collapses, not only will Japan lie in ruin, but the entire world will also face serious damages."
Because there are 31 nuclear units of a similar type to Unit 4 in the U.S., the American government has been downplaying the disaster to protect its own reputation, alleges Murata. This is, in fact, the primary reason why so little has been reported on the severity of Fukushima following the disaster. The American empire, in other words, does not want the world, nor the American people, to know that there is the possibility of literally dozens of Fukushima situations occurring on American soil, should the right disaster situations arise.

Fukuahim Disaster Was Man Made & Could Have Been Prevented
A Japanese parliamentary inquiry has concluded last year’s nuclear meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was "a profoundly man-made disaster — that could and should have been foreseen and prevented." We speak to former nuclear industry executive Arnie Gundersen about the report and what it means for U.S. nuclear facilities, in particular the 23 with a similar design to the Fukushima plant.
"There’s actually some curious information on Fukushima Unit 1. That was the first one to fail," Gundersen says. "That was built by an American company, General Electric, and an American architect/engineer. So it’s hard for the Japanese to blame themselves, when this was an all-American design. ... I am concerned that the industry, the nuclear industry in the United States, will say it’s a Japanese problem. And it’s not."

US Released Massive Amounts Of Nuke Radiation 1958-1984
Like a dark family secret long suspected but never confirmed, the shock of discovery is all the more lurid for coming into the light years later. So it is with the news of radioactive material released into the air -- at levels higher than any seen in the nation -- at closed nuclear fuels plants in Armstrong County.
Incredulity feeds the first reaction: Surely this could not have happened. But apparently it did, according to good authority.
That would be Joseph P. Ring, a Harvard University radiation safety officer who teaches at Harvard and the University of Massachusetts. He wrote a 37-page report that was filed Tuesday as part of federal lawsuits brought against plant operators Babcock & Wilcox Co. and Atlantic Richfield Co. by about 90 cancer victims.
The plants operated in Apollo and Parks Township from 1958 through 1984. Mr. Ring found "numerous large-scale releases of ionizing radiation into the neighboring environment" during the operating lives of the plants. The emissions added up to "the largest quantity ... of any nuclear facility in the United States."
But putting dirty plants in neighborhoods -- something that should never have been done, Mr. King wrote -- was only one part of the equation. Worse yet, he cited internal documents that said the operators knew of the problems that began with faulty construction but never did enough to stop them.
These revelations are not news to those who live near the plants -- after all, they are the basis of the allegations in the lawsuits. Patricia Ameno, a plaintiff in a previous round of litigation, told Post-Gazette reporter Rich Lord that, due to health problems, "A lot of people have lost not only their entire savings but their homes." Families have been torn apart by illnesses and deaths, she said.
The lawsuits, brought by plant workers and neighbors in 2010, are before U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gary L. Lancaster, who will have the ultimate say on Mr. Ring's report and other expert opinions filed. But on the face of it, what happened at the old plant sites seems an outrage.
While the Apollo site has since been cleaned up, a lesson can be drawn. The nuclear industry -- which this newspaper has long supported -- doesn't lack for regulation, and indeed the Atomic Energy Commission and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission sometimes cited the facilities over the years. But apparently not enough.
That raises a larger point: We live at a time when conservative politicians are strongly pushing the idea that prosperity will come when free enterprise is allowed to operate unfettered by regulations -- as if the natural laws of human behavior have been repealed. To see how that might work out, a person need only go to Armstrong County and ask the people who live there.

Was Fukushima A Nuclear War?
The World is at a critical crossroads. The Fukushima disaster in Japan has brought to the forefront the dangers of Worldwide nuclear radiation.
The crisis in Japan has been described as "a nuclear war without a war". In the words of renowned novelist Haruki Murakami:
"This time no one dropped a bomb on us ... We set the stage, we committed the crime with our own hands, we are destroying our own lands, and we are destroying our own lives."
Nuclear radiation --which threatens life on planet earth-- is not front page news in comparison to the most insignificant issues of public concern, including the local level crime scene or the tabloid gossip reports on Hollywood celebrities.
While the long-term repercussions of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster are yet to be fully assessed, they are far more serious than those pertaining to the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine, which resulted in almost one million deaths (New Book Concludes - Chernobyl death toll: 985,000, mostly from cancer Global Research, September 10, 2010, See also Matthew Penney and Mark Selden The Severity of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster: Comparing Chernobyl and Fukushima, Global Research, May 25, 2011)
Moreover, while all eyes were riveted on the Fukushima Daiichi plant, news coverage both in Japan and internationally failed to fully acknowledge the impacts of a second catastrophe at TEPCO's (Tokyo Electric Power Co Inc) Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant.
The shaky political consensus both in Japan, the U.S. and Western Europe is that the crisis at Fukushima has been contained.
The realties, however, are otherwise. Fukushima 3 was leaking unconfirmed amounts of plutonium. According to Dr. Helen Caldicott, "one millionth of a gram of plutonium, if inhaled can cause cancer".
An opinion poll in May 2011 confirmed that more than 80 per cent of the Japanese population do not believe the government's information regarding the nuclear crisis. (quoted in Sherwood Ross, Fukushima: Japan's Second Nuclear Disaster, Global Research, November 10, 2011)
The Impacts in Japan
The Japanese government has been obliged to acknowledge that "the severity rating of its nuclear crisis ... matches that of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster". In a bitter irony, however, this tacit admission by the Japanese authorities has proven to been part of the cover-up of a significantly larger catastrophe, resulting in a process of global nuclear radiation and contamination:
"While Chernobyl was an enormous unprecedented disaster, it only occurred at one reactor and rapidly melted down. Once cooled, it was able to be covered with a concrete sarcophagus that was constructed with 100,000 workers. There are a staggering 4400 tons of nuclear fuel rods at Fukushima, which greatly dwarfs the total size of radiation sources at Chernobyl."
Worldwide Contamination
The dumping of highly radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean constitutes a potential trigger to a process of global radioactive contamination. Radioactive elements have not only been detected in the food chain in Japan, radioactive rain water has been recorded in California:
"Hazardous radioactive elements being released in the sea and air around Fukushima accumulate at each step of various food chains (for example, into algae, crustaceans, small fish, bigger fish, then humans; or soil, grass, cow's meat and milk, then humans). Entering the body, these elements - called internal emitters - migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, continuously irradiating small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years often induce cancer". While the spread of radiation to the West Coast of North America was casually acknowledged, the early press reports (AP and Reuters) "quoting diplomatic sources" stated that only "tiny amounts of radioactive particles have arrived in California but do not pose a threat to human health."
"According to the news agencies, the unnamed sources have access to data from a network of measuring stations run by the United Nations’ Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization. ...
... Greg Jaczko, chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, told White House reporters on Thursday (March 17) that his experts “don’t see any concern from radiation levels that could be harmful here in the United States or any of the U.S. territories”.

What prevails is a well organized camouflage. The public health disaster in Japan, the contamination of water, agricultural land and the food chain, not to mention the broader economic and social implications, have neither been fully acknowledged nor addressed in a comprehensive and meaningful fashion by the Japanese authorities.
Japan as a nation state has been destroyed. Its landmass and territorial waters are contaminated. Part of the country is uninhabitable. High levels of radiation have been recorded in the Tokyo metropolitan area, which has a population of 39 million (2010) (more than the population of Canada, circa 34 million (2010)) There are indications that the food chain is contaminated throughout Japan:
Radioactive cesium exceeding the legal limit was detected in tea made in a factory in Shizuoka City, more than 300 kilometers away from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Shizuoka Prefecture is one of the most famous tea producing areas in Japan.
A tea distributor in Tokyo reported to the prefecture that it detected high levels of radioactivity in the tea shipped from the city. The prefecture ordered the factory to refrain from shipping out the product. After the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, radioactive contamination of tea leaves and processed tea has been found over a wide area around Tokyo. Japan's industrial and manufacturing base is prostrate. Japan is no longer a leading industrial power. The country's exports have plummeted. The Tokyo government has announced its first trade deficit since 1980.
While the business media has narrowly centered on the impacts of power outages and energy shortages on the pace of productive activity, the broader issue pertaining to the outright radioactive contamination of the country's infrastructure and industrial base is a "scientific taboo" (i.e the radiation of industrial plants, machinery and equipment, buildings, roads, etc). A "coverup report" by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (May 2011), entitled "Economic Impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Current Status of Recovery" presents "Economic Recovery" as a fait accompli. It also brushes aside the issue of radiation. The impacts of nuclear radiation on the work force and the country's industrial base are not mentioned.
The report states that the distance between Tokyo -Fukushima Dai-ichi is of the order of 230 km (about 144 miles) and that the levels of radiation in Tokyo are lower than in Hong Kong and New York City.(Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake and Current Status of Recovery, p.15). This statement is made without corroborating evidence and in overt contradiction with independent radiation readings in Tokyo (se map below). In recent developments, Sohgo Security Services Co. is launching a lucrative "radiation measurement service targeting households in Tokyo and four surrounding prefectures".
The fundamental question is whether the vast array of industrial goods and components "Made in Japan" -- including hi tech components, machinery, electronics, motor vehicles, etc -- and exported Worldwide are contaminated? Were this to be the case, the entire East and Southeast Asian industrial base --which depends heavily on Japanese components and industrial technology-- would be affected. The potential impacts on international trade would be farreaching. In this regard, in January, Russian officials confiscated irradiated Japanese automobiles and autoparts in the port of Vladivostok for sale in the Russian Federation. Needless to say, incidents of this nature in a global competitive environment, could lead to the demise of the Japanese automobile industry which is already in crisis.
While most of the automotive industry is in central Japan, Nissan's engine factory in Iwaki city is 42 km from the Fukushima Daiichi plant. Is the Nissan work force affected? Is the engine plant contaminated? The plant is within about 10 to 20 km of the government's "evacuation zone" from which some 200,000 people were evacuated (see map below).
Nuclear Energy and Nuclear War
The crisis in Japan has also brought into the open the unspoken relationship between nuclear energy and nuclear war.
Nuclear energy is not a civilian economic activity. It is an appendage of the nuclear weapons industry which is controlled by the so-called defense contractors. The powerful corporate interests behind nuclear energy and nuclear weapons overlap.

It should be noted that the complacency of both the media and the governments to the hazards of nuclear radiation pertains to the nuclear energy industry as well as to to use of nuclear weapons. In both cases, the devastating health impacts of nuclear radiation are casually denied. Tactical nuclear weapons with an explosive capacity of up to six times a Hiroshima bomb are labelled by the Pentagon as "safe for the surrounding civilian population".
No concern has been expressed at the political level as to the likely consequences of a US-NATO-Israel attack on Iran, using "safe for civilians" tactical nuclear weapons against a non-nuclear state.
Such an action would result in "the unthinkable": a nuclear holocaust over a large part of the Middle East and Central Asia. A nuclear nightmare, however, would occur even if nuclear weapons were not used. The bombing of Iran's nuclear facilities using conventional weapons would contribute to unleashing another Fukushima type disaster with extensive radioactive fallout.
The crisis in Japan has been described as "a nuclear war without a war". In the words of renowned novelist Haruki Murakami:
"This time no one dropped a bomb on us ... We set the stage, we committed the crime with our own hands, we are destroying our own lands, and we are destroying our own lives."
Nuclear radiation --which threatens life on planet earth-- is not front page news in comparison to the most insignificant issues of public concern, including the local level crime scene or the tabloid gossip reports on Hollywood celebrities.

Moreover, while all eyes were riveted on the Fukushima Daiichi plant, news coverage both in Japan and internationally failed to fully acknowledge the impacts of a second catastrophe at TEPCO's (Tokyo Electric Power Co Inc) Fukushima Daini nuclear power plant.
The shaky political consensus both in Japan, the U.S. and Western Europe is that the crisis at Fukushima has been contained.
The realties, however, are otherwise. Fukushima 3 was leaking unconfirmed amounts of plutonium. According to Dr. Helen Caldicott, "one millionth of a gram of plutonium, if inhaled can cause cancer".
An opinion poll in May 2011 confirmed that more than 80 per cent of the Japanese population do not believe the government's information regarding the nuclear crisis. (quoted in Sherwood Ross, Fukushima: Japan's Second Nuclear Disaster, Global Research, November 10, 2011)
The Impacts in Japan
The Japanese government has been obliged to acknowledge that "the severity rating of its nuclear crisis ... matches that of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster". In a bitter irony, however, this tacit admission by the Japanese authorities has proven to been part of the cover-up of a significantly larger catastrophe, resulting in a process of global nuclear radiation and contamination:
"While Chernobyl was an enormous unprecedented disaster, it only occurred at one reactor and rapidly melted down. Once cooled, it was able to be covered with a concrete sarcophagus that was constructed with 100,000 workers. There are a staggering 4400 tons of nuclear fuel rods at Fukushima, which greatly dwarfs the total size of radiation sources at Chernobyl."
Worldwide Contamination
The dumping of highly radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean constitutes a potential trigger to a process of global radioactive contamination. Radioactive elements have not only been detected in the food chain in Japan, radioactive rain water has been recorded in California:
"Hazardous radioactive elements being released in the sea and air around Fukushima accumulate at each step of various food chains (for example, into algae, crustaceans, small fish, bigger fish, then humans; or soil, grass, cow's meat and milk, then humans). Entering the body, these elements - called internal emitters - migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, continuously irradiating small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years often induce cancer". While the spread of radiation to the West Coast of North America was casually acknowledged, the early press reports (AP and Reuters) "quoting diplomatic sources" stated that only "tiny amounts of radioactive particles have arrived in California but do not pose a threat to human health."
"According to the news agencies, the unnamed sources have access to data from a network of measuring stations run by the United Nations’ Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization. ...
... Greg Jaczko, chair of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, told White House reporters on Thursday (March 17) that his experts “don’t see any concern from radiation levels that could be harmful here in the United States or any of the U.S. territories”.

Radioactive Hell On Earth
I really wish this subject would just go away and that we could just go on with life and have a good time. There are actually so many things to enjoy on Mother Earth—there are the spiritual realms all around us such as the “above beings” (Native American spirituality expression) that that we may dance, intermingle and communicate with (pray to).
Fortunately we know for sure that one day we will join up with those who live beyond their bodies, meaning we are going to die whether we like it or not. It is our spiritual destiny to lose our bodies and let them go back to the dust from whence they came. The bad news is that it is going to happen a whole lot faster for the lot of us humans who will have to learn to survive on an increasingly contaminated planet. It wasn’t enough to cover the globe with lead, then mercury, plastic and a host of other chemicals.
We have now made it more difficult to live on earth and that situation is going to get much worse. There have been severe nuclear accidents before, several very bad ones in Russia and farmers are still feeling the effects of Chernobyl. Hundreds of British sheep farmers still have to obtain a license every time they want to move sheep. Before anything moves off the farm it has to be inspected and scanned with a Geiger counter. That contamination has not gone away it is still burning people’s and animals’ bodies and will continue to do that for a long time.
Radioactive hell gets hotter depending on who and where you are, with babies and fetuses suffering the most. As today’s essay develops, the story does get worse. No one talks about Fukushima much anymore but it is one of the most dangerous and significant events in our history. How many of us are going to come down with cancer, go sterile? And what are we going to say to our kids? The world’s schools are certainly not teaching their students about it but that’s not surprising since schools do not really educate but instead indoctrinate the young in our civilizations failed ways.
Radioactive Rain-Outs
Nuclear expert Arnie Gundersen is saying that radioactive rain-outs will continue for a year—even in Western U.S. and Canada—because the Japanese are burning radioactive materials. Gundersen says that this radioactivity ends up not only in neighboring prefectures, but also in Hawaii, British Columbia, Oregon, Washington and California. Meteorologically, snow and rain will accelerate local fallout. Local rain showers that originate above radioactive clouds intensify radioactive contamination in certain areas. Contamination tends to be greater in drainage systems, on low ground, and in flat, poorly drained areas
Now for the really bad news—and if this does not make you sick nothing will. Japan’s former Ambassador to Switzerland, Mr. Mitsuhei Murata, spoke at the public hearing of the Budgetary Committee of the House of Councilors on March 22, 2012 on the Fukushima nuclear power plants accident. Before the Committee, Ambassador Murata strongly stated that, if the crippled building of reactor unit 4—with 1,535 fuel rods in the spent-fuel pool 100 feet (30 meters) above the ground—collapses, not only will it cause a shutdown of all six reactors but it will also affect the common spent-fuel pool containing 6,375 fuel rods, located some 50 meters from reactor 4. In both cases the radioactive rods are not protected by a containment vessel; dangerously, they are open to the air.
This would certainly cause a global catastrophe like we have never before experienced. He stressed that the responsibility of Japan to the rest of the world is immeasurable. Such a catastrophe would affect us all for centuries. Ambassador Murata informed us that the total number of the spent-fuel rods at the Fukushima Daiichi site excluding the rods in the pressure vessel is 11,421 (396+615+566+1,535+994+940+6375).
The No. 4 pool is about 100 feet above ground, is structurally damaged and is exposed to the open elements. If an earthquake or other event were to cause this pool to drain this could result in a catastrophic radiological fire involving nearly 10 times the amount of Cs-137 released by the Chernobyl accident.
Based on U.S. Energy Department data, assuming a total of 11,138 spent-fuel assemblies are being stored at the Dai-Ichi site, nearly all, which is in pools. They contain roughly 336 million curies (~1.2 E+19 Bq) of long-lived radioactivity. About 134 million curies is Cesium-137—roughly 85 times the amount of Cs-137 released at the Chernobyl accident as estimated by the U.S. National Council on Radiation Protection (NCRP).
Reactors that have been operating for decades, such as those at the Fukushima-Dai-Ichi site, have generated some of the largest concentrations of radioactivity on the planet. A loss of coolant in the spent-fuel pool—whether by leakage, spillage, or boiling off of the cooling water—will lead to intense gamma radiation that would prevent human access for hundreds of meters in all directions around the spent-fuel pool, making it impossible to take corrective actions.
Under adverse circumstances there can even be a fuel meltdown in the spent-fuel pool if the temperature climbs to about 2800° C, which would vastly increase the radioactive releases and spread those releases over a much wider area.
Many will find it difficult to appreciate the actual meaning of these figures, yet we can grasp what 85 times more Cesium-137 than the Chernobyl would mean. It would destroy most of the world’s environment and our civilization. This is an issue of human survival.
Though the world’s 190-trillion-dollar indebtedness and the quadrillion in derivatives seem like weapons of mass destruction pointing down all our throats, these are trivial to the permanent destruction that our nuclear industry has provided for us.
Only those with no children and no plans to have any can shrug their shoulders and yawn, that’s how compromised biological life will be on this planet. This is a tough situation and in an absolute sense there is little we can do about it. But we can provide protection to our bodies through naturopathic detoxification and natural chelation. Having lots of sulfur on hand as well as sodium bicarbonate, iodine, clay and magnesium is a good start for a radiation survival home pharmacy.

Japan Struggles With Nuclear Decontamination
Over a year after the nuclear accident triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami contaminated large swathes of land in northeastern Japan, the future of the largely agricultural area and those who have been evacuated from it remain uncertain.
The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported on Monday that residents will not be able to return to at least seven of the municipalities around the damaged Daiichi nuclear plant in Fukushima for at least five years.
According to a government report released on Sunday, it is estimated that six of the seven municipalities will have dangerous levels of radiation - above 20 millisieverts of radiation (mSv) per year - for a decade.
Experts have told Al Jazeera that this level is considered too high.

The national government has yet to articulate a decontamination plan for the the areas around the plant, which has continuted to leak contaminated water and experience surges in radiation - so high that even robots could not function inside it at the end of March.
Indeed, a February Greenpeace report showed that in many of the contaminated areas, there was hardly anything in the way of decontamination, and farmers told Al Jazeera in March that their fields were laid to waste with highly contaminated soil and no cleanup plan in place.

"It's been a year already, and nothing," organic farmer Muneo Kano, 61, said when asked if the government had made any effort to remove the layer of radioactive soil that blanketed his seven-hectare farm.
"The Japanese government at last recognises that the return to contaminated zones will be far more complex than they originally stated," Jan Vande Putte, radiation expert at Greenpeace International, told Al Jazeera on Monday.
"For about a year, they have been creating false expectations to the evacuated population. However, they still miss the point. Tens of thousands of people are still living today in highly contaminated areas...This population gets no help and by giving priority to the return of population to evacuated zones, the government has effectively abandoned this critical group."
He said the government had now admitted that decontamination would be "far more complex that [it] originally said".

Asahi also reported that Japan's ministry of agriculture, forestry and fisheries has asked food shops to begin following government standards for radioactivity in food, allowing for higher levels of contamination in what they sold.
In the wake of the nuclear disaster, many co-operatives and shops have purchased their own becquerel counters [a piece of equipment that measures radiation in food] as a means of assuring customers that what they are eating is safe.
Hiroshi Tsuchida, head of the body overseeing a group of 33 such co-operatives, told Asahi Shimbun that forcing the shops to adopt higher levels of contamination in what they sold would damage the government's credibility because "consumers don't trust the national standards".
Voter support for Yoshihiko Noda, Japan's prime minister, has dropped to the lowest level since he took office in 2011, a newspaper survey showed on Monday, with the majority of Japanese opposing his plan to restart nuclear reactors.

The Nikkei survey also found that 50 per cent of Japanese oppose Noda's plan to raise the sales tax to 10 per cent by October 2015 to pay for welfare costs and fix public finances.
Support for the government fell to 29 per cent in the survey from 34 per cent a month ago, the lowest since Noda took office in September last year.
The government earlier this month declared two reactors at Kansai Electric Power Co's Ohi nuclear plant safe and said they needed to be restarted to avoid a summer power crunch.
But the Nikkei survey found 54 per cent of people oppose the nuclear restart decision and only 30 per cent support it.

nuclear crisis, triggered by a massive earthquake and tsunami, has hammered public faith in nuclear power.
The Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported on Monday that residents will not be able to return to at least seven of the municipalities around the damaged Daiichi nuclear plant in Fukushima for at least five years.
According to a government report released on Sunday, it is estimated that six of the seven municipalities will have dangerous levels of radiation - above 20 millisieverts of radiation (mSv) per year - for a decade.
Experts have told Al Jazeera that this level is considered too high.
